We have just seen the demise of the GAA season but not the demise of the soubriquet ‘The Ban’.
The Ban was to the GAA what Michael Collins and Eamon de Valera were to Irish politics. It was the great divide, and for many years, it was a bone of contention in the GAA.
It all began in the wake of the 1913-14 Lockout when members of the Dublin Metropolitan Police (DMP) attempted to take part in Gaelic Football and Hurling in the county.
The GAA were incensed, and they declared that all members of the DMP were excluded from their organisation. This meant that any member of the DMP could not take part in any GAA activities, nor could they attend any GAA matches.
This was known as the ‘Ban’ and the term was used to refer to the exclusion of DMP members from the GAA. This ban lasted for many years, and it caused much controversy within the GAA.
At the time, the GAA argued that the DMP had betrayed their own country by supporting the British during the Lockout, and they felt that allowing them to take part in GAA activities would be a betrayal of everything the GAA stood for.
However, the ban was eventually lifted in 1941, and the GAA allowed members of the DMP to take part in GAA activities once again.
Today, the ban is no longer in place, and members of the DMP can now take part in GAA activities. However, the term ‘The Ban’ is still used in the GAA as an unofficial term to refer to the exclusion of members of the DMP from the GAA.
